The History of Spain

Spain has a long and distinctive past. This unique country has been occupied by many regimes including: the Phoenicians; the Romans; the Suevi; the Vandals; the Alans; the Visigoths; and the Arab-Muslims.

During the 1400s, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, whom were Catholic Monarchs, married, thus the reign began over the Spanish Empire. However by the 1930s, the people of Spain no longer wanted a Monarchy and so The Republic was created on April 14, 1931.

The Republic was riddled with political, social and economic discord. The country would fall into a world filled with war and dictatorship which lasted over forty years. Once Dictator, General Francisco Franco died in 1975, the Monarchy government was reestablished giving way to a western-style democracy which has developed the country, and today, ranks twelfth in the world on its economy and commands the tenth highest quality of life index rating in the world.

Spain is also a member of several global organizations including: the United Nations, European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, World Trade Organization and others.

Climate of Spain

You can expect three main climate variations in Spain. If you are along the peninsula or coastal regions, it is more prone to a Mediterranean climate, with dry and very warm summers, beautiful autumns and springs and mild winters.

In the southeastern portion of the country where the Ebro valley and Murcia is located; the climate can be referred to as semiarid; a desert-like heat, with very hot summers and mild to warm winters.

The north quarter of the country where Cantabria, Basque Country, Asturias and portions of Galicia are located, you can expect what is known as oceanic climate; where the summer, spring, autumn and winter seasons are determined by the ocean, though you can anticipate mostly warm summers and cool winters.

Your Visa to Spain

If you are a citizen of the European Union (EU), which means the country that you maintain citizenship in, you will not be required to attain a visa to enter Spain. You are allowed to stay up to 90 days within a six month period.

If the country that you maintain citizenship in is not a part of the EU, you will be required to attain a visa to enter Spain unless there have been special arrangements made between Spain and your home country. Your local consulate will have visa applications and can assist you with this process. You’ll need to apply for and have in hand, your visa prior to travel.

All travelers are required to carry a passport. It is recommended that you have at least two full blank pages in the visa section prior to traveling. Often times, you may have to travel through another country or region before arriving in Spain and this country may require the necessary stamps within your passport/visa section.

Also, check with your airline to determine whether or not you’ll need a transit visa. Countries that you may pass through on the way to Spain may require it.

Lastly, always check with your local consulate prior to travel to inquire about any visa updates.

Currency of Spain

The Euro is the currency of Spain. Spain also accepts major credit cards such as your Visa, MasterCard or American Express in major stores and some restaurants – if using your credit card, there will be a surcharge, fee or rate comparable to what you would pay normally when purchasing with your card.

Using your ATM card in Spain will work and the fees will be comparable to exchanging currency at a bank.

If you need to exchange currency in Spain:

any major bank will work;

if you own an American Express card, seek out their local office; or

if you’re looking for the best currency exchange rate, seek out reputable exchange offices which handle most currencies and usually have a better rate of exchange. The best ways to find these offices are, inquiring with your hotel concierge, or if you are traveling with a tour group reach out to your guide.

The Language

The official language of Spain is Spanish. If you’re not already familiar with the dialect, it’s always customary to familiarize yourself with the native language of any country you’re visiting; learning main words and phrases will help you adapt and feel more comfortable during your adventure.

It is suggested that you take a basic on-line Spanish tutorial; pick up a “how to” book or, if you’re savvy you can pick of the language once you’re in Spain, as Spanish is considered one of the easier languages to grasp, and friendly natives of the region may assist you along.

Traveling to Spain

Air travel is always the best and most economic way to travel to Spain. Always try and book a few weeks or months in advance as you are pretty much guaranteed an awesome deal.

Once you’re in Spain, you will have access to the country’s train system, buses, and taxis. Renting a car is always an option – an expensive option but it may suit you if you plan on exploring some of Spain’s regions that aren’t easily accessible by train or bus.

The largest airport in Spain is Barajas Airport in Madrid.

Cities to Visit While in Spain

Madrid – diverse and very friendly

Barcelona – borders France with great beaches

Sevilla – stylish city with great cuisine and night life

Granada - stunning gardens and Moorish palaces

Valencia – great festivals – i.e. Las Fallas

We already know the verb ESTAR (To stay): it’s an irregular Spanish verb. Do we remember how to conjugate it?

Pretérito Imperfecto de Indicativo: Irregular Verbs

Vocabulario: Tiendas (Shops)

Diálogo

Ejercicios

Something About Spain and South America and a Little Tip!

Key

PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO DE INDICATIVO: IRREGULAR VERBS

We’re lucky!

This tense has got only two irregular verbs: ser and ir. We learnt the conjugation of ser in the last lesson. In this lesson we’re going to see the conjugation of ir.

In the next lesson we’re going to begin to learn the pretérito indefinido which is a little bit more difficult than the pretérito imperfecto. Anyway, I’m sure you won’t have any problem!

IR

Yo iba

Tú ibas

Él/Ella/Usted iba

Nosotros-as íbamos

Vosotros-as ibais

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes iban

VOCABULARIO

TIENDAS* (SHOPS)

¡Vamos de compra! (Let’s go shopping!)

Supermercado (Supermarket)

Centro comercial or Shopping* (Shopping center)

Verdulería (Fruit and vegetable store)

Carnicería (Butcher’s shop)

Mercado (Market)

Pescadería (Fish shop)

Panadería (Baker’s shop)

Tienda de ropa (Clothes shop)

Tienda de zapatos (Shoes shop)

Perfumería (Perfumery)

* In some South America’s countries, it’s more common the use of negocio instead of tienda and the use of shopping instead of centro comercial.

DIÁLOGO

Michelle y Sophie están en el centro comercial…

Michelle: 1. ¿Vamos a la tienda de ropa?

Sophie: 2. Vale.

Michelle: 3. Quiero comprar un vestido para la fiesta de esta noche.

Sophie: 4. ¿De qué color lo quieres?

Michelle: 5. Azul.

Sophie: 6. ¿Te gusta este?

Vocabulary: Mascotas (Pets)

Dialogue/Questions

Exercises

Something about Spain and South America and a little tip!

Key

GRAMMAR QUESTION: ¿SER O ESTAR?

SOME EXPLANATIONS…

Probably you’ve already noticed that in Spanish we can translate the English verb to be as ser and as estar.

But how can we understand which one is the correct option in a sentence?

This is one of the most difficult Spanish grammar matters but with a little bit of exercise it will be easy to understand.

By and large, ser indicates something that doesn’t change, it describes the essential characteristics of somebody or of something (soy alto, soy estadounidense…) and estar indicates a state, something temporary, a condition (estoy en España, estoy enfermo…).

There are some exceptions but you’re going to learn them later because right now you don’t need them.

Let’s just say that ser is used to tell “what something/somebody is” and estar is used to tell “how something/somebody is”.

Sometimes the choice between ser and estar depends on what we want to say; one example will explain it better: if I say Juan es listo I mean that Juan is a smart boy but if I say that Juan está listo I mean that he’se ready. You’re going to learn all these nuances only speaking and practicing.

Estar

MATE

In Argentina, in Uruguay and in other countries in South America people drink mate all day long. Mate is an infused drink and it’s prepared from steeping dried leaves of yerba mate in hot water. It’s served with a metal straw from a shared container. Drinking mate has got a very strong social meaning: you share the container and the metal straw, called bombilla, with your family or with your friends and you chat and spend some time together. Drinking mate is healthy both physically and emotionally.

En Argentina, en Uruguay y en otros países latinoamericanos la gente toma mate todo el día. El mate es una bebida preparada con yerba mate y agua caliente. La bombilla y el recipiente para tomar esa bebida se comparten: tomar mate tiene un fuerte significado social; lo tomas con tu familia o con tus amigos y, mientras tanto, charláis y pasáis un rato juntos. Tomar mate es saludable para tu físico y para tu mente.

CONJUNCTIONS/CONJUCIONES: Y/E and O/U

Y/E

I’m sure you already know that Y means “and”. Maybe you’ve noticed that sometimes, instead of Y, you find E; for instance: voy a casa e intento descansar (“I go home and I try to rest”). Probably you’ve already understood that we should use E instead of Y when the following word begins with –i. Of course this change only has phonetical reasons.

O/U

The same thing happens with O and U. We have to write U instead of O before the words which begin with –o. Example: ¿Quieres pescado u otra cosa? (“Do you want fish or another thing?”).

Él/Ella/Usted hace

Nosotros hacemos

Vosotros hacéis

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes hacen

As you can easily notice, the only irregular part of the conjugation is “yo hago”; then it’s conjugated as usual. It’s the same thing with the following verbs (the most important ones):

- PONER (TO PUT), yo pongo

- DAR (TO GIVE), yo doy

SPANISH LAUNCH AND DINNER

Spanish people have launch at 3 pm and dinner at 10 pm. They love to eat outside their home; it’s very easy to find little places where you can eat very well at a low price: tapas, for instance, are very popular; they’re like “food sample” but if you eat two of them generally you’re ok. The most famous Spanish foods are paella and tortilla.

Los españoles almuerzan a las 3 de la tarde y cenan a las 10 de la noche. Les encanta comer fuera de su casa; es muy simple encontrar pequeños lugares donde se puede comer muy bien a un precio muy bajo: las tapas, por ejemplo, son muy populares; son como “muestras de comida” pero comiendo dos de ellas ya estás sin hambre. Las comidas españolas más famosas son la paella y la tortilla.

USES OF THE PRESENTE DE INDICATIVO

The presente de indicativo corresponds to the English Simple Present.

When do we use it?

- To express actions which take place in the moment we’re talking. Example: Yo estudio en mi casa (I study at home)

- To express frequent actions. Example: Desayuno todas las mañanas (I have breakfast every morning)

- To express future actions. Example: Mañana vamos a la escuela (Tomorrow we go to school)

- To talk about the past. Example: Cervantes escribe el Don Quijote en 1600 (Cervantes writes Don Quijote in 1600).

- To talk about permanent things such as physical features, jobs etc. Example: Yo soy rubia (I’m blonde) or Yo soy abogado (I’m a lawyer).

IRREGULAR VERB OF THIS LESSON: IR (TO GO) – PRESENTE DE INDICATIVO

Yo voy

Tú vas

Él/Ella/Usted va

Nosotros/Nosotras vamos

Vosotros/Vosotras vais

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes van

VOCABULARY – ¿QUÉ HORA ES? – WHAT TIME IS IT?

How to ask “what time is it?”

¿Qué hora es?

How to answer

Es la una

Son las dos

Son las tres

Son las cuatro

Son las cinco

Son las seis

Son las siete

Son las ocho

Son las nueve

Son las diez

Son las once

Son las doce

As you can see, the only “irregular” hour is “es la una”.

If you want to say, for example, “it’s 2 am” you should say “son las 2 de la mañana” and if you want to say “it’s 2 pm” yo should say “son las 2 de la tarde”.

From midnight to midday (to express an “am hour”) we should say SON LAS … DE LA MAÑANA.

From midday to 7 pm we should say SON LAS … DE LA TARDE.

From 7 pm to midnight we should say SON LAS … DE LA NOCHE.

Of course you don’t have to be specific, you can just say the time without making any difference between am and pm and that’s enough.

To say “it’s 1:30/2:30” etc. you should say:

Es la una y media, son las dos y media, son las tres y media etc.

SON LAS … Y MEDIA

To say “it’s 2:05” or “it’s 3:36”: son las dos y cinco, son las tres y treinta y seis etc.

So you have to say HOUR+Y+MINUTES (We only know the numbers from 0 to 20, next lesson we’re going to learn the numbers from 21 to 100).

To say, for instance, “it’s 20 to 8″ you should say son las ocho menos veinte, so

SON LAS … MENOS … (MINUTES)

From … to … : DESDE LAS … HASTA LAS …

DIALOGUE

Mark and Luke are going to the university…

Mark y Luke van a la universidad…

Mark: Sophie, Luke y yo vamos a la universidad.

Sophie: Bueno. ¿A qué hora vuelven*?

Luke: A las 8 de la noche.

Sophie: ¿Nos encontramos para cenar en lo de Alejandro?

Mark: Vale*. ¿A qué hora?

Sophie: A las 10.

Luke: Bueno, entonces nos vemos después. ¡Chau!

Sophie: ¡Hasta luego!

Translation

Mark: Sophie, Luke and I are going to the university.

Sophie: Ok. What time will you come back?

Luke: At 8 pm.

Sophie: Will we meet at Alejandro’s house to have dinner?

Mark: Ok. What time will we meet?

Sophie: At 10 pm.

Luke: Ok, so see you later. Bye!

Sophie: Bye!

*Vuelven (Volver): it’s an irregular verb and it means “to come back”. We’re going to learn it next lesson. Vale, which means “ok”, is used above all in Spain. In other countries they say bueno or ok.

The masterwork of the Spanish Literature is El Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. It was published at the beginning of the XVII century. It’s a very big book but it’s really interesting, above all because of its themes: the parody of the knight tales, the complementarity between dreams and reality and their conflict and many philosophical, political and historical issues. Moreover, it’s a funny book which tells wise things in a very original way.

Verb Conjugation (Conjugación de verbos españoles): Something about the Simple Present and the Infinitive

Some wonder about Spain and South America and a little tip!

Key

Verb Conjugation (Conjugación de verbos españoles): Something about the Simple Present and the Infinitive

In Spanish we have three way to express an infinitive verb: -ar, -er,-ir. The first tense we’re going to learn is the Simple Present (Presente de Indicativo) which describes above all present actions (for instance something that you’re doing in the exact moment you’re talking) or features of somebody or of something which are stable (physical features, job, etc.). Next lesson we’re going to learn how to use the presente de indicativo.

Now, let’s focus on the infinitive:

First Conjugation

Second Conjugation

-er (beber, “to drink”, comer, “to eat”)

Third Conjugation

-ir (abrir, “to open”, descubrir, “to discover”)

Examples

LLAMAR (“TO CALL”)

Yo llamo

Tú llamas

Él/Ella/Usted llama

Nosotros llamamos

Vosotros llamáis

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes llaman

Tú bebes

Él/Ella/Usted bebe

ABRIR (“TO OPEN”)

Yo abro

Tú abres

Él/Ella/Usted abre

Nosotros abrimos

Vosotros abrís

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes abren

As you can see, the second and the third conjugation are very similar; we can only see changes for vosotros and for ellas/ellos/ustedes. There are many irregular verbs but we’re going to learn them gradually.

Definite and Indefinite Articles (Artículos Determinados e Indeterminados)

Artículos Determinados

Feminine/Plural

They all can be translated as “the” in English.

Rememeber that the feminine words which begin with –a such as agua (“water”) or –ha for phonetical reasons need the article el before. It’s not difficult to understand when to use el instead of la: just choose what sounds better. Anyway there are some exceptions but you’re going to learn them in the future.

MOST IMPORTANT USES:

-         when we say the hour (son las 2, “it’s 2 o’clock”) or a day of the week (el lunes voy al gimnasio, “on Monday I go to the gym”);

-         with surnames (la señora García vive en mi ciudad, “Mrs García lives in my city”);

- indefinite article+infinitive verb in order to use the verb as a noun (el estudiar es interesante: it literally means “to study is interesting”).

ARTÍCULOS INDETERMINADOS

Feminine/Plural

Un and una In English can be translated as a/an. Unos and unas correspond to some, any and a few.

USE OF THE ARTICLES

The definite articles are used when we talk about something that we already know or we’ve already mentioned before (it’s the same thing in English). We use the indefinite articles to talk about something unknown, something we haven’t mentioned yet during a conversation.

Example: Veo un coche. El coche está roto. (“I see a car. The car is broken”).

Veo un coche (I see a car in the street, I see it for the first time and I haven’t mentioned it before). El coche está roto (Now we know the car because it’s just entered in our conversation and I can use the definite article).

Anyway, in English we have the same rule.

SOMETHING ABOUT SPAIN AND SOUTH AMERICA AND A LITTLE TIP!

CURSO DANDALÚ

Andalucía is a very interesting Spanish region. It’s in the South of the country and its main cities are Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Málaga. These cities feature an Arabic architecture mixed with Catholic monuments and traditions. People from Andalucía are very kind and friendly and there you can find a street culture; that means that people spend a lot of time outside, going to public places and enjoying the wonderful climate of this place. Their accent is very nice and funny (at the beginning it’s a little bit hard to understand it!); you can find a video on Youtube called Curso Dandalú: in this ironic video a man “teaches” how to talk as a person from Andalucía.
